Caring For Fishing Waders and Boots

Waders and boots, to be of any use, obviously must be kept dry inside. In warm weather one often finds himself so damp that he may suspect his waders of leaking although usually it is only perspiration. Waders thus dampened should be opened and hung up so the air can get at them. Waders that are actually wet inside demand more thorough treatment.

I learned how to dry out rubber boots or waders under somewhat distressing circumstances. I was fishing a sheltered bay on Bass Lake, Ind., during a raw, northeast wind one day in the spring. I was casting from shore, wading out as far as the height of my boots would permit. I had a common grain sack tied to my belt to hold the fish which, despite the unpropitious circumstances, were striking well. As soon as the bag grew decently heavy I decided to go ashore and forgetting all about the bag tied to my waist, I turned, stepped on it, lost my balance and took what the youngsters call "a header" into the icy water.

By the time I drove four miles in an open motor car in the teeth of the cold wind a hot fire and dry clothing were welcome, to say the least. My host, Frank Hay, the dean of the northern Indiana anglers, then showed me how to quickly dry wet boots. First he emptied out the water and rubbed the inside of the boots with a dry cloth to remove as much of the remaining moisture as possible. Then he took sheets of newspaper and placed them on the hot stove until they scorched (they turn brown and give forth a "burned" odor when sufficiently heated) and crammed my boots full of this warm material. In a remarkably short time they were dried perfectly.

Heating oats, bran or sand and using in the same way is also recommended but the newspaper treatment is the best I have ever seen so I pass the idea along. Parenthetically, you will note that I do not recommend a grain sack for holding fish, in the chapter on tackle!

As soon as the angler reaches his fishing grounds he should remove his waders from the suit case or duffle bag and hang them up. Do not pack waders that are wet as they are liable to rot. As soon as the angler reaches home he should hang the waders in the open air until they are thoroughly dried. Do not roll them up when storing them between seasons.

Boots or waders with a leak are worse than useless. The best way to locate a puncture is to blow up each boot or wader leg with a tire pump and submerge in a tub of water when small bubbles will tell where the trouble is. The poorest way to find a leak is to have a trickle of icy water tell you about it.

A leak can be patched by either inserting a rubber plug, such as is used for patching tires, or by a round patch put on with tire cement. The quick repair discs, that fit both over and under the hole and tighten, are also handy. A temporary patch can be made with adhesive tape or canoe glue. Best of all, if the material will permit, is to have the puncture vulcanized by the garage man.

Wintertime. Shopping for plus size boots. I remember it well. I was born in western Pennsylvania, and every fall I'd go shopping for plus size snow boots. I live in South Florida now, so my need for boots has been eliminated. But the agony of shopping for boots in my size up north was something I won't soon forget. No stores had plus size boots!

I'd start out with a vision of what I wanted. Something mid calf or full length. Brown, with zipper, and good soles that would hold me up on ice. That shouldn't have been hard to find, right?

So I'd visit the local shoe stores, and grit my teeth every time the clerk brought out a new pair of boots. I'd try them on, and they'd fit fine in the foot area, but they wouldn't zip up! None of them were designed for women with a wide calf. That started to get really embarrassing about the third set of boots brought out. So I'd try another store and then another.

I once had a nice plus size clerk who told me when I walked in and asked for long boots, that I might as well go elsewhere. They didn't stock them. I asked the lady where she got her plus size boots, and she pointed behind the counter to her short black leather cutie pie boots. Yuck.

I once found a pair of boots that fit me. They fit like a glove. But they were ORANGE.

Several stores and a whole mall later, I'd end up with short black hiking boots. I'd come home with unfashionable boots and a good chunk of my self image in the trash can.

All that's changed with the internet age. We can go online and find just the plus size boots we need. I'll be visiting snowland this winter, and I'm going to have to go looking for new boots. I haven't had to any boots for a couple years now. But at least this time I know that I'll be able to find exactly what I want, in colors and style I like. Online. And the darn boots will ZIP UP!

A Strange Affinity For My Winter Boots

Some people can be so in love with a pair of shoes that they want to wear them even when they're completely inappropriate for the season. I am one of those people because I feel bad all summer long because I can't wear my cute winter boots. Since it is too hot outside, I have to tuck my boots away in the closet until the weather gets cold enough again.

The winter boots that I am in love with are tan and chunky. They also have huge treaded soles that make them look like work boots. I can walk right through deep puddles if I am wearing my special winter boots with the huge soles. It feels as though I have the ability to walk on water. Wearing my winter boots adds two whole inches to my height as well as keeps my feet warm and dry. They're attractive and look cute when worn with a pair of jeans.

I'm always tempted to wear my winter boots in the summer when it's raining, even though I know that by the end of the day my feet will be miserable and hot. I know that my feet will be happy for those first few hours after I put them on. I will also be happy when I look down and see them at the bottom of my jeans.

Strangely, I have a similar desire to wear inappropriate footwear in the winter as well. I can suddenly change my mind and not care so much about my boots. Suddenly, all I want in the world is to be able to wear sandals again. I especially adore flip flops because it's like walking around barefoot. The feeling that I am walking around in bare feet covered only by flip flops is the only feeling that I love more than actually walking around in my bare feet.

I had never liked a pair of winter boots I owned before last winter. In the past, my boots were purely functional and I owned them only for emergency situations. I only wore them when I have to walk through and stand in snow up to my calf just to clear my car off so I could get it out of the driveway. I am looking forward to snow because I know that it means a chance to wear my fashionable winter boots again.

You can always tell a good boot by its stitching. It will be neat and small, and barely noticeable. In contrast a poorly made boot has big stitching, so big it draws your eye away from the style and to the ugly criss crosses.

But is there is there a real difference. There is a difference. Poorly stitched footwear will be cheap. The kind of boot you find at a discount store emblazoned with a brand name you've never heard of. You will go for a hike in these boots and they may most likely split at the poorly stitched seam. Well stitched boots on the other hand can last years if you look after them well. You can walk up mountains, trek hundreds of miles, and though the boots will wear down it will take much longer.

So what is quality stitching? Well the general guideline is that is the stitching together of quality material. Whether this is suede or black leather, if the material is good you are halfway there. So parts of suede, for example, are stitched together using small stitches that will not break unless put under great strain. There you have it the boot is made. But we're not totally happy with the work so we have to quickly check if they are the same size and shape. A pair obviously has to match.

That was a quick overview so lets look at it in a bit more detail. First of all the sole. This is probably the most important part of the shoe and the part that is under the greatest stain because obviously our feet are constantly pushing down on it. So it has to be strong. The sole is stitched using leather. Leather is obviously a strong material and will last probably as long as any other part of the boot.

The toe of a boot should be strong as well. This is often the first part to break because of the movement of the foot against the front of the boot. Press it at the end. Is the material strong? If it is then you have a good toe.

For the heel quality boots use bits of leather and stack them up until they have the right size. These are necessary not stitched together or even stitched to the boot; instead good shoe glue can be used.

The best thing to remember is that boots don't have to be perfect. Of course both pairs have to fit the same size feet and that fit should be comfortable and provide support. That is where the quality comes from, and if there is a few minor hitches for example one boot slightly tall than the other as long as the difference isn't big it only adds character.
